Pe Sean Hayes il stiti din “Will&Grace”, unde-l interpreteaza pe Jack, un gay out, efeminat, in cautarea unei vocatii. Din 1998 incoace orientarea sexuala a lui Hayes a fost un secret bine ascuns de Hollywood, acesta refuzand sa confirme sau sa infirme zvonurile cu privire la orientarea sa sexuala. Acesta a jucat diverse roluri de tipi gay si str8, iar scuza sa a fost intotdeauna ca nu va spune nimic cu privire la preferintele sale sexuale deoarece vrea sa fie credibil si cand joaca un personaj gay si cand joaca un personaj str8. Prins in vartejul coming out-urilor recente (Neil Patrick Harris, din How I Met Your Mother, l-ati vazut in deschidere la Oscaruri sau Matthew Bomer din serialul White Collar), acesta a acordat un interviu revistei gay The Advoate in care isi face un coming out extrem de furios, atacandu-i pe toti cei care au pus presiune asupra sa sa faca acest gest. Iata ce a zis acesta:

I feel like I’ve contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, and if anyone wants to argue that, I’m open to it. You’re welcome, Advocate. (…) Why would you go down that path with somebody who’s done so much to contribute to the gay community? (…) That was my beef about it. What more do you want me to do? Do you want me to stand on a float? And then what? It’s never enough.
